For the last 15 years, Fresh Del Monte has been developing a pineapple called “Rubyglow” — a red-shelled pineapple. It’s a cross between a traditional pineapple and a Morada pineapple, which Del Monte says is typically inedible. The result of the two is this Rubyglow.
Up until now, it’s only been available in China, however it’s now being shipped to other countries, including the U.S. Only 5,000 are available this year and 3,000 in 2025; so because it’s so rare people are dishing out $400 for it. The only place you can purchase this coveted pineapple is on Melissas.com.
So what makes this pineapple so special, besides only a limited amount being available? Del Monte describes it as
…a red outer skin, bright yellow flesh, and a new sweet flavor similar to Del Monte pineapples.
Other than its red exterior, not much is different than your typical pineapple you can pay $2-$3 for at your local grocery store.
