California Schools To Start Teaching Cursive Handwriting Again
Elementary school students in California will soon be taught an ancient form of handwriting: cursive. A bill signed by Governor Gavin Newsom requires all first through sixth grade teachers to implement a cursive handwriting program. The bill was sponsored by Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva, who says knowing cursive is more important than one might think. “A lot of the historical documents going back two or three decades are actually in cursive,” Quirk-Silva says. “I went on 23andMe looking for some family records, and they were all written in cursive.” It’s unclear when the new course of study will be put into place.
