In the next coming years, Tennessee will get its first toll lane, also known as “Choice Lanes.”

The Choice Lanes means it’s not a toll booth where you have to pay, but motorists will rather be given the option if they want to avoid traffic and congestion, and get to their destination quicker.

WATE reports that this was part of Governor Lee’s infrastructure bill – The Transportation Modernization Act (TMA).

The new lanes aim to provide a more predictable travel experience for those willing to pay.

The first Choice Lanes will be set up on I-24 between Nashville and Murfreesboro and the tolls will run as dynamic pricing, similar to ride share apps. Citing Florida as an example [who has these lanes] toll prices can range anywhere from 50¢ to $10, depending on the time of day. Busses and TDOT officials will be able to use the lanes for free. Prices will ultimately be determined by the TMA board.

Construction on the Choice Lanes is anticipated to begin in 2027.

With Tennessee continuing to grow in population, this new toll lane will determine if more will be built throughout the state.

The video below breaks down how Choice Lanes will ultimately work.
