It’s something you’ve probably only seen in movies, but nature has proven that it’s reality.
Over the weekend, a woman from Maine was walking on Popham Beach State Park, in Phippsburg (an hour outside of Portland, Maine), when out of nowhere she sunk into the sand at hip-level. The woman started screaming,
I can’t get out.
She says she couldn’t feel the bottom. Thankfully, her husband acted quickly and pulled her out. Once he did, they both watched the sand fill back in.
Since the incident, park officials are now warning people of these sinkholes. The spokesperson for the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry told AP News that unlike the movies, you won’t get sucked into the sand. Your best bet is to remain calm, take your time, and wiggle or crawl yourself out.
This isn’t the first time someone has fallen into the sand, ever since a string of winter storms hit the area it,
…rerouted a river that pours into the ocean, softening the sand in area where beachgoers are more apt to walk…
